How many miles do you have to drive that electric car before it’s better for the environment than a conventional one? How much carbon is involved given the disruption and large volume of materials involved in installing a heat pump? And, most pertinently, how much carbon, and waste, is generated in replacing timber windows with new timber or (yuck) UPVC?
The answer to all of the above questions is, unfortunately, lots. That’s not to say that at Gecko Glazing we’d advise against the above (except replacing your windows of course – that’s crazy and, from a heritage point of view, little short of vandalism, but we would say that).
But we would highlight the need to consider what’s known as the ‘embodied carbon’ of measures taken to reduce your carbon footprint. Unfortunately, if something has a lot of carbon ‘embodied’ in its production, even if it’s a ‘green’ measure, it will take a long time before you’re ‘quids in’ from an environmental point of view.
That’s where our Gecko Panes excel; because there’s so little material involved in their construction, and the carbon savings they deliver are usually so significant, they’re great on this measure. And compared to replacing your windows (including chucking all of that lovely heritage building fabric into a skip, contributing loads to landfill into the bargain)? There’s no contest.
